Back in the day, I know a woman who found parts of this lyric very sexy.

July 9, 2011Wednesday Morning
May 18, 2011The memory of this song popped up in middle of writer’s block. I listened to the Wednesday Morning 3AM album about 100,000 times while I was in college, but this particular song lyric irritated me greatly. I always thought that Simon could have done better than armed robbery as cause of crisis. Why? Not sure, but there are lots of reasons for forced separation that seem more probable and less avoidable. And I doubt Simon actually knows very much about the criminal lifestyle. It’s all very strained.
Then he annoyed me even more by putting the same song on a different album with more of rock arrangement. I felt he was trying to fix a song that didn’t get the success he had hoped for, and missed the point entirely.
Orthodox Fool
April 28, 2011This morning I had a lyric from the Richard Rodger’s musical No Strings bouncing around in my head:
If I stood over there and looked my way
What a pitiful sight I’d see.
Stupid, stupider, stupidest.
This is the declension,
Of little declining me.
I remember it because we had the original cast album back in the day. I thought I’d look it up on YouTube.
It isn’t on YouTube. I thought everything was on YouTube. I thought every smidgen of the cultural heritage was on YouTube. It’s not. In fact, No Strings is barely known to the internet at all.
I never saw the musical performed, and the story always seemed unrealistic to me, being based on a wilder and more cosmopolitan life style than any member of my family every indulged in. Plus, I’ve never warmed to the “two people in love who can’t work it out” storyline. But the music was terrific, and some of the lyrics were quite clever.
Hot, hot, hot!
February 10, 2011My mind is on vacation today. Enjoy a little borrowed heat.
